Kazakhstan has launched Starlink Mobile, a satellite-based mobile communication service using SpaceX’s Direct-to-Cell technology to connect smartphones in areas without traditional mobile coverage.

The technology allows compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites without requiring a satellite phone, external antenna or other specialized equipment. When terrestrial coverage is unavailable and satellite conditions are suitable, the connection can be established automatically, Qazinform reports.

The service could be particularly useful in Kazakhstan’s remote regions, along highways and in mountainous areas. It can also help maintain communications when ground-based infrastructure is damaged.

The launch follows agreements reached during President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s official visit to the US in 2025. Later that year, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development and Beeline Kazakhstan signed a memorandum on implementing Direct-to-Cell technology, with initial practical trials carried out in December.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev said Kazakhstan is the first country in Central Asia where Direct-to-Cell technology has completed practical testing and moved into consumer service.

At the initial stage, Starlink Mobile users will be able to send and receive messages and access basic internet services. Beeline Kazakhstan subscribers will receive the service free of charge during the promotional period.

The service is currently available on compatible Android smartphones, while support for additional operating systems is planned for the future.

To use Starlink Mobile, subscribers need to update the Janymda app, activate Starlink through the application and enable data roaming on their smartphones.

When conventional mobile coverage is unavailable, users can manually select the satellite network Beeline Starlink, which may also appear on devices as 401 04.

The company said satellite connectivity is intended to complement existing terrestrial mobile networks rather than replace them.

Kazakhstan is also planning to expand Starlink connectivity beyond smartphones. Earlier reports said the country plans to introduce Starlink internet on 124 passenger trains, extending satellite connectivity to railway routes across the country.
