President Tokayev Calls for Dialogue After US Slaps Tariffs on Kazakh Goods

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has issued an official response to US President Donald Trump following Washington’s announcement of new import tariffs on Kazakh goods.

In the letter, President Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s longstanding commitment to a fair, predictable, and mutually beneficial trade relationship with the US, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

He noted that Kazakhstan has served as a reliable trade and investment partner over the years and emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral economic ties.

The Kazakh leader also expressed readiness to continue constructive dialogue with the US in order to find a rational and balanced solution to current trade issues. President Tokayev voiced confidence that a compromise can be reached through diplomacy and mutual respect.

The correspondence follows Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 25 per cent tariff on all goods imported from Kazakhstan, starting August 1, 2025. The move, Trump said, is aimed at addressing what he described as a persistent trade imbalance caused by Kazakhstan’s tariff and non-tariff barriers.

Trump also noted that Kazakh companies wishing to avoid tariffs would have the option to relocate production to the US, where such duties would not apply.

Kazakhstan was one of seven countries to receive similar letters, signaling a broader shift in US trade policy under Trump’s renewed economic platform.
