UN Declares April 22 International Day of Greening Planet Following Kazakhstan's Initiative

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a Kazakhstan-initiated resolution proclaiming April 22 as the International Day of Greening the Planet.

The resolution was adopted as part of the country’s efforts to advance the global environmental agenda, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry said.

The initiative was first proposed by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.

The resolution was co-sponsored by 32 countries from different regions of the world, highlighting broad international support for the initiative.

The new international day is intended to raise global awareness of the importance of greening and restoring natural ecosystems.

It also calls on governments, the UN system, international and regional organizations, civil society and other stakeholders to organize relevant environmental activities and initiatives.
