Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with World Customs Organization (WCO) Secretary General Ian Saunders to discuss cooperation in customs administration, trade and regional transport connectivity.

Tokayev highlighted the importance of close cooperation with the WCO in improving Kazakhstan’s customs legislation and administration, The Caspian Post reports, citing Akorda.

He said Kazakhstan is making significant efforts to strengthen transport links across Eurasia and create favorable conditions for cargo transit.

The Kazakh president also pointed to the country’s efforts to develop a “smart border” model by introducing digital solutions aimed at streamlining customs procedures.

Saunders, in turn, praised the steady development of relations between Kazakhstan and the WCO. He hailed Kazakhstan’s progress in modernizing customs administration, adopting digital technologies and strengthening the institutional capacity of relevant authorities.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further expanding mutually beneficial cooperation, which has developed successfully for more than three decades.

They also exchanged views on emerging challenges and trends in global trade, with particular attention to expanding trade and economic ties and strengthening Central Asia’s transport and logistics potential.

At the end of the meeting, Tokayev awarded Saunders the Order of “Dostyk” II Degree for his significant contribution to strengthening friendship and partnership.
