A Bishkek city court has sentenced former head of Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev to four years in prison, with two years of probationary supervision.

The ruling was announced by lawyer Latypbek Nuralimov following the court hearing, according to 24.kg.

The court also reclassified the charge against Tashiev from “violent seizure of power” to “obstruction of the exercise of electoral rights.”

Similar sentences were handed down to former Prosecutor General Kurmankul Zulushev, former Jogorku Kenesh Speaker Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu and other defendants in the case.

Earlier, Bishkek’s Pervomaisky District Court had also sentenced Tashiev and the other defendants to four years in prison with three years of probationary supervision. Both the defense and prosecution appealed that ruling.

Prosecutors had sought nine-year prison sentences for each of the defendants.
