Kuwait Pledges $1 Million Grant for Kyrgyzstan’s Rural Water Project

The Kyrgyz parliament has stated that Kuwait will provide $1 million in grant funding to Kyrgyzstan to support a rural water supply and sanitation initiative.

The announcement came during a meeting of the Committee on Agrarian Policy, Water Resources, Ecology and Regional Development, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

During the meeting, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture requested approval in the first reading of the draft law titled “On Ratification of the Grant Agreement between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development for Financing the Feasibility Study and Preliminary Development of the Project ‘Development of Water Supply and Sanitation in Rural Settlements of Chui, Issyk-Kul, and Naryn Regions’.”

The grant, totaling 300,000 Kuwaiti dinars (approximately $1 million), will be used to carry out a feasibility study and preliminary project development.

Almaz Zheenaliev, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry and Director of the Water Resources Service, said the project will rehabilitate and expand drinking water and sanitation systems, providing rural populations with clean water, reducing disease, and improving sanitary conditions.

Committee members urged the Ministry of Agriculture not to delay the project’s implementation, and the bill was subsequently approved.
