Kyrgyzstan Eyes Global Spotlight with New Mountain Research Hub

Kyrgyzstan is taking a bold step toward becoming a global hub for mountain science, announcing plans to build a cutting-edge Mountain Research Center designed to meet the highest international standards.

The project was revealed by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov during the national forum “Unguzhol: Cultural and Spiritual Renewal,” signaling a major investment in science, innovation, and environmental research, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

The new center will unite leading institutes and research departments focusing on areas critical to mountainous regions, including:

Water resources

Geophysics

High-altitude medicine

Climatology

Ecology

By bringing these disciplines under one roof, Kyrgyzstan aims to position itself at the forefront of research into some of the world’s most pressing environmental and climate challenges.

The initiative has strong political support, with President Sadyr Japarov personally endorsing the project.

According to officials, the center will be a modern, seven-story facility of global scale, with plans to officially launch it next October during the upcoming Global Mountain Summit.

Alongside the new project, authorities are also moving to strengthen the country’s scientific base. A directive has been issued to restore all buildings of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan back to researchers.

The goal: ensure these facilities are used strictly for scientific work and innovation, reinforcing Kyrgyzstan’s long-term commitment to developing domestic research.

With the Mountain Research Center, Kyrgyzstan is not just investing in infrastructure-it’s building a platform for international collaboration, scientific breakthroughs, and sustainable solutions tailored to mountain ecosystems.

As the country leans into its natural strengths, the project could elevate its role in global climate and environmental research.
