Kyrgyzstan Launches Roadside Fruit Orchard Project

Kyrgyzstan has launched a nationwide initiative to plant fruit orchards along major roadways, aiming to reduce soil erosion, strengthen embankments, and promote green infrastructure.

The Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry will oversee the project, with one-kilometer sections of roads in each district slated for tree planting starting in 2026, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

Regional experts have selected suitable land plots, and fruit varieties have been recommended based on local soil and climate conditions. Officials note that, beyond environmental benefits, roadside orchards can boost food security by increasing fruit production.

The ministry is currently preparing a Cabinet of Ministers resolution to formalize the project, which draws on international experience demonstrating the positive impact of orchard planting along transport corridors.
