Kyrgyzstan Speeds Up Smart Energy and Renewables Push

Kyrgyzstan is stepping up efforts to modernize its energy sector, launching major initiatives to expand renewable power, digitalize electricity networks, and train a new generation of energy specialists.

Officials from the Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy say 2026 could become a turning point for the country’s power industry as authorities accelerate the transition to smart energy infrastructure and sustainable electricity generation, The Caspian Post reports via foreign website.

The reforms aim to increase reliability, reduce technical losses, and support industrial development and regional tourism.

A key part of the modernization plan is the construction of the 220-kilovolt Isanova substation in the Osh Region in southern Kyrgyzstan.

The facility will be equipped with two 200-megavolt-ampere transformers, allowing the grid to integrate more renewable energy sources while reducing reliance on aging transmission lines in the region.

Kyrgyzstan is also implementing a large-scale digital upgrade of its electricity system. The program includes:

Installation of smart electricity meters

Modernization of transformers and grid equipment

Deployment of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems

These technologies will improve real-time monitoring, operational efficiency, and demand forecasting across the national power network.

Another major focus is developing skilled professionals for the future energy sector. A new advanced training center is being built based on the Zero Energy Building (ZEB) concept.

The facility will feature a solar power plant, energy storage systems, and modern simulators for relay protection, enabling engineers and technicians to gain practical experience with next-generation power technologies.

Officials say the center will play a crucial role in preparing specialists capable of managing sophisticated digital power systems, supporting Kyrgyzstan’s long-term technological and energy transition.
