Kyrgyz filmmaker and cinematographer Kanybek Kalmatov has officially commenced production on a feature‑length biographical film titled Aitmatov, which will chronicle the life and legacy of the celebrated writer Chingiz Aitmatov.
Kalmatov has secured exclusive adaptation rights through a formal agreement with Eldar Aitmatov, the writer’s son, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.
The authorisation clears the way for a comprehensive cinematic portrayal of Aitmatov’s journey-from his early years and formative experiences to his global literary acclaim and lasting influence on 20th‑century literature.
The upcoming film, planned in the biopic genre and grounded in real events, aims to present Aitmatov’s evolution into a cultural icon for Kyrgyzstan and beyond. Its premiere is slated for 2026.
Kalmatov, a graduate of the Cinematography Department of the famed Russian State University of Cinematography, boasts an international portfolio and is best known for his role as chief cinematographer on the hit Kyrgyz film Paradise Under Mother’s Feet. His experience is expected to bring a polished, high‑quality production to Kyrgyz cinema.
