Kabul Hails Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan Border Deal

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has welcomed the border demarcation agreement between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, calling it a significant step toward enhancing regional stability and fostering cooperation.

The presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed the deal on Thursday on demarcating their shared frontier, seeking to end a long-running border conflict that has seen dozens killed in skirmishes in recent years, The Caspian Post reports citing Reuters.

“IEA welcomes the border demarcation agreement signed between the Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said.

A statement from the ministry said Kabul viewed the resolution of the long-standing issue through mutual understanding as a positive step toward regional stability and economic growth.

It added the caretaker government had always supported peace, dialogue and regional cooperation and believed the agreement would lead to enhanced stability and sustained cooperation in Central Asia.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, the European Union, as well as Kuwait, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan have also welcomed the agreement.
