Russia, Iran Seek Closer Coordination Within BRICS, SCO, EAEU

Russia and Iran have reaffirmed their mutual interest in intensifying joint efforts within BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and the United Nations, the Russian Foreign Ministry said following Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Iran.

According to the ministry, during his working visit to Tehran, Lavrov was received by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and held meetings with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei, The Caspian Post reports.

“Both sides expressed a mutual interest in intensifying joint efforts in multilateral formats - the United Nations, BRICS, the SCO, and the EAEU,” the ministry said.

The ministry also noted the active political dialogue between the two countries and close cooperation at the governmental and sectoral levels, as well as between their parliaments, regions, and business communities.

“Attention was given to issues related to expanding trade, economic, and investment cooperation, including the implementation of joint transport, logistics, and energy projects,” the statement said.

The current bilateral agenda was discussed in the traditionally constructive atmosphere, with a focus on strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership in light of agreements reached between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of recent events in Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.

Lavrov’s visit to Tehran continued substantive political dialogue and helped identify practical steps for further developing bilateral relations and foreign policy cooperation between Russia and Iran, the ministry added.
