Russian President Vows to Avoid Fueling Global Arms Race

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed no intention to escalate the global arms race.

President Putin made these remarks during a Security Council meeting, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.

He stated that Moscow is prepared to continue complying with the restrictions of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) for an additional year after the treaty’s expiration on February 5, 2026.

“The expiration of START in 2026 will mark the end of the last agreement imposing direct limits on missile capabilities,” President Putin cautioned, adding that completely abandoning the treaty’s legacy would be a serious mistake.

President Putin also tasked the state agencies with intensifying surveillance of the US growing missile defense capabilities.

The Russian leader highlighted the need for heightened vigilance over US activities, particularly those connected to the arsenal regulated by START.

“I urge the relevant agencies to continue thoroughly tracking the corresponding activities of the American side, primarily concerning the START treaty arsenal,” Putin said.

Additionally, he instructed authorities to closely monitor the development and deployment plans for interceptor systems in space, signaling Russia’s concern over emerging threats beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

President Putin also addressed several pressing domestic issues, with a particular focus on migration policy.

“We have several items on the agenda today, including issues related to migration policy,” Putin said during the session.
