A 51-year-old woman was killed by a bear after encountering the animal on her property in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk Region.

The incident occurred early in the morning in the village of Voznesenka, Irbey-Sayansky District. The woman reportedly left her house and spotted a bear trying to get into a shed where chickens and other domestic animals were kept, according to SHOT.

She attempted to return to the house but was unable to escape. The bear attacked and killed her on the spot.

A neighbor who heard the woman’s screams and the commotion arrived at the scene and shot the bear with a rifle.

The local Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation, and police are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
