A 39-year-old man was killed in a bear attack in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region.

The incident occurred near the village of Potapovo in the Yenisei municipal district. The man, who worked in logging and was guarding equipment at a truck parking area, was attacked by a bear on September 22 evening. He died at the scene from his injuries, SHOT reports.

The situation has become increasingly tense as bears continue to approach populated areas. A total of 73 bears have reportedly been killed in the district since the beginning of September, while residents continue to report encounters with the animals on a daily basis.

A heightened alert regime has been introduced because of the threat to residents. People have been advised to avoid going outside after dark and to stay away from forests.

Bear encounters reported in neighboring Khakassia

The situation has also escalated in Abaza, a town in Russia’s neighboring Republic of Khakassia.

Khakassia Deputy Head Dmitry Buchenik described the town as being “effectively under a bear siege” after bears were spotted approaching from multiple directions during the night.

Some of the animals were driven away, while three bears were killed, including one described as particularly large. One bear reportedly damaged a fence at a summer cottage while fleeing.
