At least four people have died and nine others were injured in a fire at a shopping center in Sterlitamak, Russia’s Republic of Bashkortostan.

The fire prompted the evacuation of 17 people, including a child. Witnesses said some visitors were forced to jump from windows as several floors of the building were engulfed in flames, according to dp.ru.

The preliminary cause of the fire was reported to be an electrical short circuit. A newly opened clothing section was reportedly the area where the fire started.

Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry initially reported four injured people, including a woman who was taken to intensive care. A 27-year-old woman who reportedly jumped from the third floor, a teenager and another visitor were said to be in moderate condition.

Later reports said three sisters were among those killed in the blaze. They were identified as 34-year-old Viktoria, 29-year-old Elizaveta and 45-year-old Elena.

The sisters had reportedly visited the shopping center that day to choose a birthday gift for their mother.

Relatives of those who died would receive the necessary assistance.

The Emergency Situations Ministry later revised the number of injured to nine and confirmed that four people had died.
