The European Commission has urged Russia for the third time this week to provide information about a reported plague outbreak in Siberia.
European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova made the statement, according to European Pravda.
“Let me say for the third time this week in the press room: Russia must provide information about the plague as soon as possible,” she said.
Hrncirova said European Commission experts discussed the situation with EU member states as part of the Health Security Committee. Representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) also took part in the meeting and said the organization was seeking clarification from Russia as well.
She noted that the EU currently does not have enough information to assess the epidemiological situation, the risks to other countries or possible response measures. The European Commission has contacted Russia directly but has not yet received a response.
Hrncirova stressed that, as a member of the WHO European Region, Russia is expected to provide timely, accurate and specific information, particularly because the situation could have cross-border implications.
“The whole world is waiting for information from Russia,” she said.
