Russian tourists in Mauritius have reportedly been confined to their hotels amid widespread unrest, with visitors being advised not to go outside as protests and clashes continue in parts of the island.
The situation is particularly tense around La Gaulette, where unrest has been reported near hotels. The road to the popular Le Morne area has been blocked, forcing travellers to take a detour through the mountains, according to SHOT.
Tourists said they had been moving freely around the island just days ago, but some are now unable to leave their hotels because of security concerns.
Whale-watching excursions have also been cancelled. Organisers reportedly cannot say when trips will resume, citing the unstable situation and a shortage of drivers.
A curfew from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. (GMT+4) is in effect in some tourist areas. Hotels are also facing water shortages, with supplies potentially remaining limited until December.
The protests began amid disruptions to water supplies, rising prices and growing public dissatisfaction with living conditions. Some areas have reportedly gone weeks without water.
The situation escalated sharply several days ago after a police officer fired at a minibus, seriously injuring a 27-year-old woman who was returning from work. Arson attacks, looting and clashes with security forces followed.
