NATO Considers Strikes Deep Inside Russia Under New Defence Strategy

NATO is reviewing its defence strategy to prepare for a potential conflict with Russia, considering a more proactive approach to deterrence that could include strikes deep inside Russian territory.

The issue was addressed in June at the alliance's first-ever symposium on deep-strike capabilities, according to UNIAN.

The event was led by NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkewich and brought together military leaders from member states.

The emerging concept goes beyond repelling a potential military offensive. It also envisages broader measures aimed at weakening an adversary's ability to sustain military operations.

"In the event of a conflict with Russia, we will definitely want to strike the defence industrial base," Polish Major General Ireneusz Nowak said.

Nowak said NATO had drawn an important lesson from the Russia-Ukraine conflict: "Defence also means striking back."

The proposed strategy is intended to deter potential Russian aggression and does not envisage the use of nuclear weapons, the report said.

For decades, NATO's defence posture in Europe focused primarily on preventing enemy forces from advancing into allied territory. However, the alliance increasingly believes that countering a potential threat from Russia requires a more proactive approach, including the ability to strike targets beyond the front lines.
