A 25-year-old Russian woman could face a fine of up to 3 million rubles ($36,000) and the possible confiscation of her collectible coins after customs officials found 87 items in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.
The woman arrived from Istanbul carrying coins valued at more than 1.5 million rubles ($17,936), according to Life.ru.
The collection included coins featuring Harry Potter, Pinocchio, zodiac signs and other well-known brands. Some were made of 999-purity silver.
The passenger reportedly told customs officials that the coins were for her personal collection and that she had been unaware of their value.
Customs officers are now considering whether to open a case over the failure to declare the goods. Under the applicable penalty, the fine could reach twice the value of the items, with possible confiscation.
