Türkiye and the US have signed an agreement to cooperate in the field of nuclear energy, with the signing ceremony taking place in New York in the presence of Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

Under the agreement, Türkiye Nuclear Energy Inc. and the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will jointly assess opportunities to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) and five fourth-generation reactor technologies in Türkiye, TRT Haber reports.

The study will examine a range of issues, including technical specifications, safety, licensing, costs, supply chains and potential financing models.

The work is expected to take at least one year and will cost approximately $2 million, with the US side covering the expenses.

Bayraktar said the findings will help Türkiye identify the nuclear technologies best suited to its needs and support the diversification of the country’s energy mix.
