The Azerbaijan Boxing Federation has announced that Azerbaijan's national boxing team continues impressing at the World Boxing Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan with two more athletes advancing to the semifinals.
In the 60 kg division, Mahammadali Gasimzade delivered a flawless performance against a boxer from the Dominican Republic, claiming victory by unanimous decision, The Caspian Post reports via local media.
The scorecards reflected his dominance, reading 30:27 across the board. Gasimzade now moves on to face Brazilian boxer Luiz Gabriel Do Nascimento in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, in the +90 kg heavyweight category, Magomed Abdullayev - a medalist at the World Championships - overpowered a South Korean boxer, also winning by unanimous decision with scores of 29:26, 29:26, 29:26, 29:25, and 29:26. Abdullayev is set to meet Kazakh boxer Aibek Oralbay in the next round.
Earlier in the competition, Subhan Mammadov (50 kg) had already secured a spot in the semifinals, where he will go head-to-head with Kazakh boxer Sanzhar Tashkenbay.
With their advancement, all three Azerbaijani boxers have guaranteed themselves at least bronze medals. They are scheduled to return to the ring on July 5, aiming for a place in the tournament finals.
