Suzani, a traditional form of embroidery created on cotton or silk fabric and widely used in interior decoration, has taken center stage at the first International Suzani Festival held in northern Tajikistan.
The ancient city of Panjakent welcomed more than 200 master artisans and experts from CIS countries, as well as India, Türkiye, Italy, and several other nations, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.
The festival brought together craftsmen, researchers, and culture enthusiasts to celebrate the revival of this centuries-old art form.
Craftswoman Sobira Rahimova described suzani as a precious legacy passed down from ancestors. “Suzani is an ancient craft of our forefathers that is now being reborn. This art has been included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage,” she said.
During the exhibition, visitors explored the rich history of suzani embroidery and learned about the meanings and interpretations behind its intricate patterns and symbols.
Panjakent has previously been recognized as a World Craft City for suzani embroidery. The status was awarded by a relevant council under UNESCO, according to Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry. Officials noted that the recognition highlights the refined craftsmanship and centuries-old embroidery traditions deeply rooted in the ancient city.
