Tajik Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ilhom Abdurakhmon has said that Tajikistan and Azerbaijan are exploring a new industrial cooperation model that could see alumina supplied from Azerbaijan in exchange for aluminum exports from Tajikistan.

The ambassador said Tajikistan is ready to purchase alumina from Azerbaijan to support its aluminum production industry, while also supplying aluminum to the Azerbaijani market as demand grows, The Caspian Post reports via Report.

Abdurakhmon said that discussions on aluminum cooperation were held during a recent meeting of the Azerbaijan-Tajikistan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation in Baku, where both sides expressed strong interest in expanding collaboration in the sector.

He noted that Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) and Azeraluminium have maintained a cooperation agreement for years and are continuing to explore new opportunities amid rising global aluminum prices.

“With favorable logistics and growing market demand, the issue of aluminum exports to Azerbaijan could be worked out in the near future,” the ambassador said, adding that although Azerbaijan has its own aluminum production facilities, the country also imports aluminum.

A key element of the proposed partnership involves the possible revival and modernization of Azerbaijan’s Ganja Alumina Plant. If the facility resumes operations, Tajikistan could become a buyer of Azerbaijani alumina, creating a mutually beneficial supply chain between the two countries.

The ambassador emphasized that final decisions will depend on the commercial assessments of the companies involved, including transportation costs and overall profitability.

If implemented, the arrangement could strengthen industrial cooperation between Baku and Dushanbe, boost regional supply chains and create a new avenue for trade in strategically important metals across Central Asia and the South Caucasus.
