Uzbekistan is preparing to take a historic step into space, with plans underway to select the country’s first-ever cosmonaut through a competitive, multi-stage process.

Muhiddin Ibragimov, Deputy Director of the Uzbekcosmos agency, confirmed that authorities are considering launching an open nationwide selection. The process will be rigorous and conducted in line with international standards, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

Ibragimov noted that the criteria will go far beyond professional qualifications. Candidates must meet strict psychophysiological requirements, including medical, psychological, and even linguistic standards. A special state commission will be established to oversee the selection and coordinate all stages of preparation.

The mission is expected to be more than symbolic. Uzbekistan plans to ensure that its future cosmonaut carries out a full scientific program during a short-term mission to the International Space Station (ISS), lasting approximately 10 to 14 days.

Authorities are already discussing potential research areas in cooperation with the scientific community, the Ministry of Innovative Development, and the Academy of Sciences. Proposed projects include medical and biological studies such as remote diagnostics and testing the effectiveness of local medicinal extracts in zero gravity. Other research directions may focus on plant genetics - including drought- and salt-resistant crops - as well as modeling closed agro-biosystems. Materials science experiments, including heat accumulation and dissipation testing of fabrics and fibers, are also under consideration.

It remains unclear whether a fully open public competition will be announced or whether candidates will be selected from a pre-screened pool. However, the initiative signals a bold ambition: Uzbekistan appears ready to take a decisive step toward the stars and establish its presence in the global space arena.
