Uzbekistan is stepping into uncharted technological territory as Uzatom Agency, in partnership with Japan’s Muroosystems Corporation, launches a groundbreaking international project to build a data center powered entirely by small modular reactors (SMRs).
According to Uzatom, the facility’s planned energy consumption of 50 megawatts will be supplied exclusively by SMRs, creating a stable and predictable demand for nuclear-generated electricity, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.
This model is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and utilization of nuclear power capacities.
What sets the initiative apart is its full integration of nuclear energy with digital infrastructure. Once operational, the data center will rely solely on SMRs, making it the first project of its kind globally and positioning it as a new benchmark for energy-intensive IT facilities.
The project is designed to accelerate the development of sustainable digital solutions, enhance the reliability of power supply, and introduce innovative approaches to nuclear energy use. It also highlights the growing potential of SMRs as a dependable and efficient power source for high-demand technological hubs.
Uzatom says the collaboration with Muroosystems underscores a high level of international technological partnership and creates a foundation for scaling similar SMR-powered digital projects in the future, both in the region and beyond.
