Uzbekistan, Spain Boost Agricultural Cooperation

Uzbekistan’s Minister of Agriculture, Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov, has met with Spain’s Agriculture Minister Luis Planas Puchades during the 122nd International Olive Council session, where they focused on advancing agricultural innovations.

During the friendly and constructive dialogue, the ministers focused on expanding the use of efficient technologies amid water scarcity, and strengthening knowledge exchange between the two countries, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

Abdurahmonov highlighted Uzbekistan’s growing potential in horticulture, vegetable production, and cherry cultivation. He emphasized the country’s need for crop varieties resilient to drought, soil salinity, and low temperatures.

Spain, in turn, expressed its readiness to share expertise - including precision irrigation technologies, CRISPR-based breeding, agricultural insurance systems, and the development of educational and scientific infrastructure in the agrarian sector.

Both sides also underscored the importance of cooperation with Spanish experts in developing agricultural cooperatives, modernizing food processing, and improving export infrastructure.

Investment opportunities for Spanish companies in Uzbekistan, particularly in olive product production, were also discussed during the meeting.

As a result, the two countries agreed to expand inter-institutional cooperation, pursue joint initiatives during state visits, and define long-term strategic priorities for partnership.

The talks concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, aimed at elevating Uzbekistan-Spain agricultural collaboration to a significantly higher level.
