Uzbekistan has assumed the one-year chairmanship of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), following the council’s 25th meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
The meeting was chaired by Tajikistan, and the transfer of responsibilities was announced by Tajik Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda during the closing ceremony of the expanded-format session. He wished Uzbekistan success in carrying out its new responsibilities, according to Podrobno.uz.
During its chairmanship, Uzbekistan will coordinate the work of the SCO Council of Heads of Government, which brings together the heads of government of the organization’s member states.
The new role comes ahead of another regional responsibility for Tashkent. Starting January 1, 2027, Uzbekistan will also assume the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
The decision on the CIS chairmanship was adopted at a recent meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State, giving Uzbekistan leadership roles in two major regional organizations.
