Armenia Warns of Foreign Meddling Risk Ahead of 2026 Elections

A high-ranking Armenian official stated that the country requested the EU's help in combating foreign interference ahead of the 2026 general election, as authorities have noticed a potential risk of outside influence.

“The threats are well known,” Vice Speaker of Parliament Ruben Rubinyan, from the ruling Civil Contract Party, told reporters when asked to comment on EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas’ statement about Armenia requesting assistance, The Caspian Post reports, citing Armenian media.

He pointed to the latest disinformation campaigns targeting the authorities.

“There are manifestations in Armenia’s domestic political arena that can be interpreted as attempts at interference. Disinformation campaigns are taking place in our media space; websites are being launched where sensational fake news is published-for example, falsely claiming that Pashinyan bought a house in Canada…,” Rubinyan said.

He added that the fake news is generated on obscure English-language websites and then redistributed by local Armenian media outlets.

“We see a likelihood that there could be an attempt at interference. And we are expanding our toolkit to prevent that interference,” Rubinyan said, adding that he means any attempt at external interference.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that Armenia has requested the EU’s assistance in combating “malign influence” ahead of the 2026 general elections.
