Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Azerbaijan Lu Mei has announced that at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan will pay a visit to the People’s Republic of China from August 30 to September 3.
During the visit, he will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin and attend commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, The Caspian Post reports via local media.
Ambassador Lu Mei noted that the 2025 SCO Summit - scheduled for August 31 to September 1 in Tianjin - will be the largest in the organization’s history, bringing together over 20 heads of state and leaders from 10 international organizations. The summit will serve as a pivotal platform for dialogue on security, regional cooperation, sustainable development, and the evolving role of multilateralism amid a rapidly changing global landscape.
With the world undergoing unprecedented transformation, there is an urgent need for the SCO to deepen solidarity, innovate, and better align with the global aspirations of peace, cooperation, and shared prosperity. Key themes of the summit will include reaffirming the “Shanghai Spirit,” fostering inclusive development, and addressing pressing regional and international issues.
Azerbaijan, which joined the SCO as a dialogue partner in 2016, continues to play an active role in the organization. Over the years, the country has supported the Chinese chairmanship and actively participated in various SCO initiatives, including the Political Parties Forum, the Energy Ministers Meeting, the Forum on People-to-People Friendship, the Friendship Cities Forum, and the Green Development Forum.
The commemorative events on September 3 in Beijing will honor the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the broader World Anti-Fascist War. These ceremonies, under the theme “Remember History, Honour the Fallen, Cherish Peace and Strive for a Better Future,” aim to reinforce the importance of peace, unity, and historical reflection.
Eighty years ago, after 14 years of relentless struggle, the Chinese people secured a remarkable victory, significantly contributing to the global triumph over fascism. That victory laid the foundation for a post-war international order centered around the United Nations and based on the principles of the UN Charter - a system that has underpinned global peace and stability for decades.
As the world faces renewed uncertainty, it is vital to draw lessons from history, uphold the legacy of World War II, defend international law, and preserve the multilateral system anchored in the UN. China and Azerbaijan, both of which made notable contributions to the Allied victory, remain committed to defending multilateralism, justice, and international cooperation.
President Aliyev’s upcoming visit - his second to China this year - is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties, boost cooperation across multiple sectors, and inject new momentum into the growing strategic partnership between China and Azerbaijan. According to Ambassador Lu, China is ready to work closely with Azerbaijan to implement the strategic consensus reached by the two leaders and to advance shared goals for international fairness, peace, and development.
