ANAMA Highlights Strategic Role of Demining in Urban Restoration at WUF13

The Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) organized an event called "Post-Conflict Urban Reconstruction: The Critical Role of Humanitarian Mine Action" as part of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.

Organized at the Azerbaijan Pavilion, the event brought together representatives of state institutions and international organizations to bring the mine problem faced by Azerbaijan to the attention of the international community, highlight the impact of the mine threat on the restoration and reconstruction process, and discuss global cooperation and recovery practices in the field of demining, The Caspian Post reports, citing AZERTAC.

Speaking at the event, Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of ANAMA, stated that demining is not only a humanitarian activity that saves human lives, but also the fundamental cornerstone of restoration and reconstruction. This activity establishes the necessary conditions for rebuilding residential homes, restoring infrastructure, reviving agriculture, developing transport networks, and stimulating economic activity. As part of the "Great Return" program, demining activities have been fully integrated into the processes of urban planning, reconstruction, and development.

He emphasized that the mine threat slows down the recovery process, limits development opportunities, and puts the safety of the population at risk not only in Azerbaijan but also in several countries around the world. For this reason, today's platform carries special significance. Eliminating the mine problem is not limited to national efforts alone; it necessitates sustained international support, partnerships, innovative approaches, and the sharing of best practices.

The panel discussions, moderated by Emil Hasanov, Deputy Chairman of the Public Council under ANAMA, featured Samir Poladov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of ANAMA; Ambassador Marijana Kujundžić, Head of the European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan; Rodrigo Labardini, Professor at ADA University and former Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan; and Ramil Jahangirov, Head of the Project Management Department of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture.

Panel discussions were held on demining activities as the foundation of urban reconstruction and Azerbaijan's experience in this field, international cooperation to support post-conflict restoration and reconstruction, as well as urban planning and reconstruction in cleared territories.

During the discussions, particular emphasis was placed on the strategic importance of humanitarian demining in rebuilding safe and inclusive cities in the post-conflict period.
