Armenian PM Backs Power Links With Azerbaijan, Türkiye to Boost Energy Security

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that building electricity transmission lines with Azerbaijan and Türkiye would play a key role in strengthening Armenia's energy security and supporting the country's green transition.

Speaking alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Yerevan, Pashinyan said the proposed power interconnections are part of the broader "Crossroads of Peace" initiative, which aims to restore regional transport and economic connectivity, The Caspian Post reports via Sputnik Armenia.

Pashinyan said that expanding energy links with neighboring countries is just as important as reopening transport routes.

"The construction of power transmission lines and interconnectors can contribute both to Armenia's energy security and to the green transition," he said.

Commenting on the possibility of higher prices for Russian natural gas, which Armenia currently imports on preferential terms, von der Leyen said the issue requires a comprehensive and long-term approach.

She announced that a team of European Union energy experts will arrive in Armenia next week to assess options for diversifying the country's energy supplies. The assessment will draw on the EU's experience supporting energy diversification in Ukraine and Moldova.

"We are investing in the region's energy security by opening new interconnection routes between power systems and building stronger regional energy networks," von der Leyen said.

She also highlighted the EU's continued support for the development of renewable energy projects in Armenia.

The remarks come a day after von der Leyen announced in Baku that the European Union would allocate €200 million to improve transport connectivity across the South Caucasus, reinforcing the bloc's broader strategy to strengthen regional infrastructure and resilience.
