Azerbaijani Captain Dies in Black Sea Drone Attack

A foreign cargo vessel, the Royad Mammadov, came under a drone attack in the Black Sea near the coast of Romania on October 5.

The attack killed Azerbaijani citizen Rustam Hasanov, the ship’s captain, 52. Another Azerbaijani national, Muhammad Suleymanzade, 24, remains missing, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said.

“Search and rescue operations are currently underway. The other Azerbaijani citizens who were members of the crew have been rescued, with three of them hospitalized,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry added that it is coordinating efforts with Azerbaijan’s diplomatic missions and relevant authorities in the countries concerned. Measures are also being taken to provide medical and consular assistance to the Azerbaijani citizens affected and to arrange the repatriation of the victim’s remains.

The Foreign Ministry expressed condolences to the families and relatives of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry also reiterated its call for citizens to avoid traveling to regions affected by armed conflicts or instability, as well as working on vessels operating along high-risk routes and through areas considered dangerous.
