Colombia’s president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, who is set to take office on August 7, has announced plans to close at least 14 diplomatic missions, including the country’s embassy in Azerbaijan.

The incoming president also plans to order the severing of diplomatic relations with Cuba and Nicaragua, The Caspian Post reports via teleSUR.

Azerbaijan among 14 embassies targeted for closure

“During the first stage, I will close the embassies in Algeria, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Vietnam, Ghana, Haiti, Hungary, Cuba, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Romania, Senegal, the Czech Republic and Ethiopia,” de la Espriella wrote.

The announcement would mark a major reshaping of Colombia’s diplomatic network if implemented.

During his first 100 days in office, de la Espriella also plans to conduct a technical audit of all remaining Colombian diplomatic missions.

The review will assess whether maintaining each mission is justified, with the president-elect emphasizing that his government’s foreign policy will focus exclusively on protecting Colombia’s interests abroad.
