The Astana International Financial Center (AIFC) court in Kazakhstan has upheld a claim brought by Ukraine's Naftogaz for the recognition and enforcement of an arbitration award against Russia's Gazprom.
The statement confirming this decision was published on the court’s official website, The Caspian Post reports.
Under the ruling, the Russian company is required to pay the Ukrainian company $1.13 billion in principal debt, $182 million in interest, $117 million in penalties for late payment, as well as arbitration costs amounting to €4.9 million plus additional interest.
The dispute relates to an agreement signed on December 30, 2019, concerning the transportation of natural gas to Europe through Ukraine’s gas transmission system. The conflict emerged following the termination of gas transit through the Sokhranovka gas distribution station in the Rostov region beginning in 2022. The Ukrainian side explained its refusal to meet pumping requests by citing the loss of control over its Novopskov compressor station, which had come under Russian control.
In September 2022, Naftogaz initiated proceedings in a Swiss arbitration court, which in June 2025 ordered Gazprom to pay Naftogaz $1.4 billion and to cover legal costs. The Russian company attempted to challenge the ruling; however, the Swiss Federal Court upheld the decision in March 2026.
