Türkiye, Somalia Discuss Expanding Energy Cooperation

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar met with Somali Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Dahir Shire Mohamed on Monday in Istanbul to explore opportunities for deeper cooperation between the two countries.

In a post on Türkiye’s social media platform NSosyal, Bayraktar said the talks focused on the current state of hydrocarbon exploration activities being carried out by both sides in Somalia’s onshore and offshore areas, as well as operational plans for the upcoming period, The Caspian Post reports, citing Anadolu Agency.

The Turkish minister noted that the meeting took place ahead of an expected visit to Türkiye by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Emphasizing the importance of bilateral ties, Bayraktar said Türkiye and Somalia are building their energy partnership on strong foundations.

“Türkiye sees Somalia as one of its most important partners in Africa,” Bayraktar stated, adding that cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector could help usher in a new era of collaboration in the near future.
