EU to Tackle Georgia Crisis at July 15 Foreign Affairs Council

The EU has officially added the political situation in Georgia to the agenda of its upcoming Foreign Affairs Council, set to take place in Brussels on July 15.

The issue will be discussed alongside major international developments, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East, The Caspian Post reports, citing Georgian media.

This will be the second time in recent weeks that EU foreign ministers have addressed concerns over Georgia. During the previous Council meeting on June 23, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said ministers had examined the country’s internal political environment, particularly the arrests of opposition leaders.

Kallas also confirmed that the Council had debated the potential introduction of sanctions against individuals responsible for escalating repression within the country, including judicial officials. No decisions were made at that time.

However, Kallas assured that the EU would return to the matter in July, highlighting the bloc’s ongoing commitment to monitoring political developments in Georgia.
