Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that his remarks in the European Parliament regarding EU-Georgian relations were made independently and were not requested by the Georgian side.

Speaking at a briefing, Pashinyan responded to a question about whether Georgian officials had asked him to mention during his speech in the European Parliament that one of the major obstacles on Armenia’s path toward EU integration is the frozen political dialogue between the EU and Georgia, The Caspian Post reports, citing foreign media.

“There was no request or appeal from the Georgian side,” the Armenian prime minister said.

At the same time, Pashinyan noted that Armenia and Georgia share a broader regional agenda and that Yerevan is closely following developments in relations between Brussels and Tbilisi.

“However, on the other hand, we have a common agenda on which we are working. From the rostrum of the European Parliament, I expressed my concern because we are truly worried about the situation in relations between the European Union and Georgia. This worries us,” Pashinyan said.

The Armenian prime minister addressed the European Parliament a day earlier, where he spoke about Armenia’s European integration ambitions and the regional context affecting the process.

During his speech, Pashinyan stated that Georgia plays an important role in Armenia’s European path.

“Georgia is our path to the European Union,” he said, noting that Armenia adopted a law on launching the process of EU accession after Georgia received EU candidate status.

Pashinyan claimed that Georgia’s progress toward the European Union made Armenia’s own European perspective more tangible.

“It is our expectation and request that the constructive process between the European Union and Georgia develop. This is as important for Armenia as it is for Georgia,” the Armenian prime minister stated.
