Georgia sees major opportunities to strengthen its role in the Middle Corridor, the trade route connecting Europe and Asia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.
Speaking at the International Maritime Forum in Batumi, Kobakhidze highlighted the country’s growing investment in transport and logistics infrastructure, according to business media.
Georgia has launched a large-scale modernization of its railway infrastructure and rolling stock. More than 1 billion lari ($383 million) is expected to be allocated for the work this year alone.
Meanwhile, construction of the East-West international highway has reached 75% completion, further strengthening Georgia’s position as a key transit link between Europe and Asia.
Kobakhidze said Georgia plans to attract around $7 billion by 2032 to develop its core transport and logistics infrastructure.
“By 2032, we plan to attract about $7 billion for the development of the main transport and logistics infrastructure,” Kobakhidze said.
The government’s plans include doubling railway capacity, cutting cargo transit times by half, doubling the capacity of ports and tripling the capacity of international airports.
The investment push comes as the Middle Corridor gains importance as a trade route linking China and Central Asia with the South Caucasus, Türkiye and European markets.
Georgia’s location on the route gives it a strategic role in the movement of goods between Europe and Asia, with upgraded railways, highways, ports and airports expected to increase the country’s transit potential.
