Georgia’s Parliament Speaker Warns of Rising Foreign Meddling

Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili has raised alarm over what he described as growing foreign interference aimed at undermining the country’s political stability.

Papuashvili pointed to recent actions by Brussels, suggesting they reflect a broader attempt by external forces to provoke chaos and influence Georgia’s internal affairs, The Caspian Post reports via local media.

He warned that certain powers appear intent on installing “puppet governments” through indirect manipulation.

“We are already seeing signs of these attempts. Some steps taken by Brussels indicate a coordinated effort from outside to disrupt Georgia’s stability,” Papuashvili said.

He also alleged that during the referendum held in the fall of 2024, a number of foreign ambassadors and diplomats breached diplomatic norms and interfered in the political process.

“Many ambassadors, including the EU ambassador, disregarded the Vienna Convention and directly engaged in election campaigning. However, the Georgian people once again demonstrated their resolve not to surrender their sovereignty to foreign influence,” he noted.

Papuashvili warned that such interference could escalate in a more forceful manner but expressed confidence that the Georgian public will deliver a firm response to any attempts at external manipulation.
