Georgia is seeking to chair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2027, but the European Union is opposing Tbilisi’s candidacy.

Cyprus is currently the official candidate for the 2027 OSCE chairmanship and has the backing of the European Union. However, Türkiye is blocking Cyprus’ candidacy, leaving the issue of who will lead the organization in 2027 unresolved, according to Sputnik Georgia.

EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Christian Wigand said that Brussels continues to support the Republic of Cyprus and is not considering alternative candidates.

Baltic countries have been particularly active in opposing Georgia’s bid.

The OSCE chairmanship is decided through consensus among participating states, meaning disagreements over the candidates could prolong the selection process.
