Georgia has launched the country’s largest wind power plant, a 206-megawatt (MW) facility in the village of Ruisi in the Kareli municipality.

The wind farm was built by Wind Power, a company within the Peri holding group, and features 33 wind turbines supplied by Chinese manufacturer Goldwind, according to Sputnik Georgia.

The facility is currently operating in test mode, but a full-scale launch is expected ahead of the initially planned three-month testing period, Executive Director of Peri energy company Lasha Iordanishvili said.

The project cost more than $240 million, with $119 million financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The new facility significantly expands Georgia’s wind power capacity. Before its launch, the country’s power system had two wind farms with a combined capacity of up to 40 MW.

The Ruisi project is expected to strengthen Georgia’s renewable energy capacity and increase the role of wind power in the country’s electricity system.
