The Political Council of the ruling Georgian Dream party on Thursday criticized a resolution adopted by the European Parliament, calling it an attack on Georgia and its democratically elected government.
The resolution, approved by the EP, urges the European Union and its member states to impose personal sanctions on Georgian officials and political leaders allegedly responsible for democratic backsliding, electoral fraud, human rights violations, and the persecution of political opponents and activists, The Caspian Post reports, citing Georgian media.
In its response, the ruling party recalled a statement made by the United States President Donald Trump at his campaign rally on March 26, 2023, when he declared that his efforts were “the final battle”, adding “either the deep state destroys America, or we destroy the deep state”.
“The party said Trump had “actively engaged in this crucial battle against the deep state” following his election, before comparing the alleged covert force with the EP’s approval of the resolution.
In response to today’s resolution, we declare that either the deep state will dismantle the European Union, or the EU will find the strength to somehow escape the influence of the deep state”, the Political Council said.
“Just as we wish President Trump victory in his fight against the deep state, we also wish Europe to free itself from the harmful influence of the deep state. In this struggle, we will stand with patriotic Europeans”, the statement continued.
The ruling party also mentioned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent remarks, in which he stated that “it is impossible to take European institutions seriously”, and added that the “same applies to the European Parliament”, which it claimed had “lost credibility”.
