Armenia does not currently plan to change its existing system of gas supplies from Russia and Iran, Hovhannes Abrahamyan, head of the Energy Regional Markets Department at the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, said.

Asked whether Iranian gas could become an alternative to Russian supplies in the event of potential disruptions, Abrahamyan said Yerevan is not taking any additional measures in that direction at present, according to Sputnik Armenia.

He explained that Russian gas reaches Armenia under existing agreements, while supplies from Iran are delivered under the “gas-for-electricity” arrangement. Under the scheme, Armenia compensates Iran for the gas it receives by supplying electricity.

Iran supplies Armenia with more than 400 million cubic meters of natural gas each year. The fuel is used to operate several thermal power plants in Armenia.
