An oil tanker attacked in the Strait of Hormuz was targeted after attempting to transit via the Omani shipping route with the support of the US Navy.

The vessel was attacked after it ignored repeated warnings from Iranian authorities, The Caspian Post reports via Iran International.

No Iranian government official has so far confirmed or denied the report.

Iran has warned commercial vessels against using the southern shipping lane through Omani waters in the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that any transit through the strategic waterway should be coordinated with the Iranian military.
