The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it has destroyed 16 aircraft at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran, Iran, claiming the planes were being used to transport weapons for the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah.

The IDF said the aircraft belonged to the Quds Force, the overseas operations unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to the Israeli military, the planes were used to deliver arms that were later supplied to Hezbollah, The Caspian Post reports via IDF.

The IDF claimed that Mehrabad Airport had been used by the Quds Force as a key hub for arming and financing groups aligned with Iran across the Middle East.

Israeli officials also said several Iranian fighter jets were struck during the operation, describing them as a threat to Israeli Air Force aircraft operating in Iranian airspace. The claims could not be independently verified.
