Two US intelligence sources have confirmed that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was reportedly injured during an Israeli airstrike on Iran last month.
Pezeshkian was attending a Supreme National Security Council meeting at the time of the attack, The Caspian Post reports, citing foreign media.
According to the reports, the president suffered leg injuries while escaping through an emergency shaft.
Whether Pezeshkian was the intended target of the strike remains unknown.
In an interview with Tucker Carlson earlier this month, Pezeshkian alleged that Israel attempted to assassinate him by striking the location of the security meeting.
“They did try, yes. And they acted accordingly, but they failed,” Pezeshkian said when asked if he believed Israel had tried to kill him.
“It was not the United States that was behind the attempt on my life. It was Israel. I was in a meeting. We were discussing the ways to move forward. But thanks to the intelligence by the spies that they had, they tried to bombard the area… in which we were holding that meeting,” he stated in the interview, which was translated from Farsi.
The president did not reveal the specific date of the attack.
The White House has not commented on the report, and Israeli and Iranian government officials have also declined to issue statements.
The incident occurred during a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran that claimed the lives of hundreds in Iran and 28 in Israel. Both nations claimed victory following a ceasefire brokered by the Trump administration.
Among Iran’s high-ranking casualties were Gen. Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the IRGC’s ballistic missile program.
In addition to Israeli operations, the US military conducted airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during the conflict.
