Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom has submitted a draft intergovernmental agreement to Iran on the construction of small-capacity nuclear power plants, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said.

Speaking to journalists at the Eastern Economic Forum, Likhachev said the issue of further expanding Russian-Iranian nuclear cooperation had been discussed during recent talks, according to TASS.

He noted that Russia and Iran had previously reached agreements on an additional site for the construction of large nuclear power units. During the latest negotiations, Iranian officials also raised the possibility of developing smaller-capacity nuclear facilities, prompting Rosatom to submit a draft agreement for such projects.

Likhachev said that as Iran returns to normal conditions, the country’s nuclear energy program is expected to develop further, and Rosatom intends to take part in that process.
