The United Kingdom has temporarily withdrawn its diplomatic staff from Iran due to the deteriorating security situation, while updating travel guidance for British nationals seeking to leave the country.

British citizens can exit Iran through Armenia or Azerbaijan, but the entry requirements differ for each route, The Caspian Post reports via the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The Foreign Office noted that British passport holders can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days per year. Those planning to travel through Azerbaijan must obtain a visa in advance and provide their travel details to Azerbaijani authorities through the UK Foreign Office to receive a required registration code before crossing the border.

The FCDO also warned that the British government's ability to assist citizens inside Iran remains severely limited. Due to the current security environment, UK diplomatic personnel have been temporarily evacuated, making in-person consular assistance unavailable.

Despite the withdrawal of staff, the British Embassy in Tehran continues to operate remotely, with officials monitoring developments and providing support where possible from outside the country.

The United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding calling for an immediate ceasefire across all fronts, including in Lebanon. However, on the night of July 8, the United States resumed large-scale strikes on Iran, accusing Tehran of violating the agreement by disrupting security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
