The CIA is reportedly providing military support to Kurdish groups in an effort to provoke a popular uprising in Iran.
The administration of Donald Trump has been in talks with Iranian opposition groups and Kurdish leaders about supplying military assistance. Iranian Kurdish armed formations number in the thousands, operating mainly along the Iraq-Iran border within Iraqi Kurdistan, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in Iran, several Kurdish factions have issued statements hinting at possible action and calling on Iranian forces to side with them.
On March 3, Trump reportedly held talks with Mustafa Hijri, president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan - one of the groups targeted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Kurdish sources indicated that opposition forces could participate in a ground operation in western Iran within the coming days.
Earlier in March, Trump also contacted Iraqi Kurdish leaders to discuss collaboration during a potential U.S. operation in Iran. The plan, according to sources, envisions Kurdish forces holding back Iranian troops, creating opportunities for peaceful demonstrations in major cities, and weakening regime control.
Other reports suggest that Kurdish activity could destabilize the region, deplete Iranian military resources, and potentially create a buffer zone in northern Iran - a scenario that could serve strategic interests for Israel.
However, one informed source cautioned that U.S. intelligence currently views Kurdish forces as lacking sufficient influence and resources to mount a successful uprising against the Iranian government.
